NEW CUSTOMS AREA CONTROLLER KANO/JIGAWA COMMAND ASSURED STAKEHOLDERS/BUSINESS COMMUNITY FACILITATION OF LEGITIMATE TRADE
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano/Jigawa Area Command, says it has generated more than N10 billion revenue into the coffers of the federal government which shows the Command activities at the free trade zone has been improved.
The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Mohammed Abubakar Umar, said this at a news conference on Thursday in Kano.
Umar said his Command generated N10.1 billion revenue within a short period of time.
He said the command will continue to put in place necessary measures to improve on the collection so far with the support from other units of the service such as the CIU, CPU, FOU, Border Drill and Strike Force.
"We shall maintain the success through synergy".
"We will continue to dialogue, engage and educate the local and community on the security, health and economic implication of smuggling, while discharging our statutory responsibilities of enforcing compliance with the Government fiscal policies".
Umar said the command recorded 6,361 seizures and listed the items to include foreign rice, spaghetti, macaroni, donkey skin, foreign mayor soap, used clothes, and donkey pennis among others.
The comptroller said the command arrested 15 suspects in connection with the seizures, noting that the cases were still pending before the courts
Umar, who assumed duty first week of March 2022 said the seizures were made at different times and locations under its Anti-Smuggling Activities.
The Comptroller Vowed that the NCS would continue to carry out its enforcement duties with utmost professionalism and caution, based on actionable intelligence information.
He urged the public to continue to cooperate with the service, so as to insulate the economy from smugglers and protect people’s health
“The command will continue to facilitate trade, deal decisively with economic saboteurs (smugglers), work for the security and wellbeing of the people of Nigeria,’’ Umar said.
While commending the personnel for their dedication to duty, Umar sought for the support of the media in educating the people on the ills of smuggling.
