TENSION ON THE EVE OF THE 2023 GENERAL ELECTIONS.

BY COMRADE MUSA MOHAMMED

That the Buhari administration and INEC has finally agreed to hold the February 2023 presidential (general) elections and extension hand over power to a democratically elected government on 29th May, provides a soothing relief for nigerians who until recently have been perpetually gripped by fears on the insecurity, whereby expertsi identified states across the federation where political violence may erupt if proactive measures are not taken by security agencies and other relevant stakeholders.

Nevertheless, the much talked about elections, which already around the corner stand as a litmus test on the ability of the 63 year old republic to execute a successful civilian-to-civilian transition for the fourth term from it's Independence 1960.

This is simply in view of previous failure of civilian government to transit successfully in the past, which often ended in eventual military takeover as it happened in December 1983.

Against this backdrop, the raging tension pervading the Political landscape in the country makes the forthcoming elections much more unpredictable than any one witnessed in the past.

This range from widespread fears and suspicious among the people over the ability of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to midwife credible polls through to the commitment of the incumbent government to ensure a level-playing ground between the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) and other parties Fielding contenders in the race.

Such fears have been remarkable accentuated by dubious exclusions of the the names of many candidates from the INEC list on alleged Political grounds including those from the APC, some of whose names have not been reincluded even against court verdicts demanding the commission to do so.

As a Political writers and analysts, it's my view therefore that the INDEPENDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSION (INEC) owes it an obligation to ensure a free and fair conduct of the polls across the country in the very interest of peace and national stability.

As the next few days will prove, nigerian People have learnt so many lessons from 2015 - date, variant and are thus now on their mettle with regard to the defence and protection of their votes across the country.

And already incidents have recently occurred in some states of the federation.
