Transparency Activist Stands Firm Amidst Backlash Over FOI Request
A request letter written by Comrade Musa Mohammed (Moonlight) to Hon. Sadiq Mamman Lagos, Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Kaduna State, seeking disclosure of capital allocation and expenditure for the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) from 2023 to date, has sparked controversy.
The letter, submitted to the ministry and shared on social media, has drawn criticism from some quarters, with accusations that Mohammed has overstepped his bounds. Critics question his right to request the information and speculate about the consequences if the ministry refuses to comply.
However, Mohammed remains undeterred, citing the Freedom of Information Act, 2011, and relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. "I am exercising my right to information," he stated.
Mohammed warned that failure by the commissioner and the ministry to provide the requested records will compel him to seek redress through legal channels, including filing a suit for enforcement of his constitutional right to information.
The development highlights the ongoing struggle for transparency and accountability in governance, with citizens increasingly demanding access to information and holding public officials accountable.
