Northern Security Dialogue: Arewa Media Practitioners Nominate Prof. Armaya'u Bichi to Chair 8th Lecture After Yakawada Turns Down Role



The Arewa Media Practitioners have nominated Prof. Armaya'u Hamisu Bichi, former Vice Chancellor of Federal University Dutsinma (FUD), as Chairman of the 8th Arewa Media Practitioners Lecture and Award for National Development.

The nomination follows the withdrawal of Hon. Samaila Abdullahi Yakawada, Chairman of the North-West Development Commission (NWDC), who reportedly declined the role. Sources close to the committee said Yakawada questioned the nomination, citing the approaching APC primaries.

The event, tagged _Northern Security Dialogue_, is themed: _Insecurity, Banditry, and Terrorism in Northern Nigeria: Causes, Genesis, and Solutions_. It is scheduled for Saturday, 13th May, 2026, at the Murtala Mohammed Library in Kano.

According to the organizing committee, Prof. Bichi’s leadership and insight are vital to the national conversation on peace and development in the region.

When contacted, Professor Bichi accepted the nomination and promised to chair the event and contribute to the success of the programme.

Comrade Musa Mohammed, National President of Arewa Media Practitioners, said the committee settled for Prof. Bichi because of his track record in educational development and his commitment to peacebuilding in Northern Nigeria.

“As Chairman, he will deliver the opening remarks, moderate key sessions, and present awards to recipients,” Mohammed said.

The annual lecture brings together scholars, security experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to examine the root causes of insecurity in Northern Nigeria and propose actionable solutions. This year’s edition will also honour distinguished Nigerians who have contributed to national development.

Arewa Media Practitioners is an umbrella body representing Chief Executive Officers of over 100 media houses across Northern Nigeria.
