Salary Crisis Hits Ardo-Kola LGA as Staff Cry Out Over 4-Month Non-Payment

Some staff of Ardo-Kola Local Government Area have cried out over alleged non-payment of salaries for about four months, saying the situation has caused “serious hardship” for their families.

The workers, who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity, alleged that salaries due to them for the past four months had been diverted. They also accused the Local Government Treasurer of “conniving with some banks” in the alleged diversion.

Another allegation raised by the staff is that the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs is “employing/selling appointments without the consent of LGA chairmen.” These claims have not been independently verified.

Due to the development, some affected staff said they are preparing a petition to an anti-graft agency to investigate how and why their salaries have not been paid for the four-month period.

When contacted, the Chairman of Ardo-Kola Local Government Council, Hon. Umar Bello Badawaire, said journalists should direct inquiries to the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs regarding staff salaries.

“I personally directed my Treasury Department to compile the names of the affected officers so as to know the reason behind withholding their salary,” the chairman said.

He added: “Don’t publish yet because it is not only in my local government. I think others are having the same problems too. And if you have facts on the issue and you are ready to defend your publication, I think you are free to publish your report.”

Efforts to reach the Treasurer of Ardo-Kola LGA and the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.
